CJ Hobgood Wins O’Neill World Cup of Surfing

CJ Hobgood took advantage of nice conditions to pull out a win at the O’Neill World Cup at Sunset Beach, HI, edging Tom Whitaker in a four-man final.

Hobgood scored a combined 15.00 in the final, led by his final wave score of 8.50.  Whitaker scored a combined 12.67.  Jordy Smith, who received the contest’s only perfect 10 Thursday in the round of 32, also made it to the final but was fourth with only a 2.86 combined score.  Smith had a run of bad luck in the final including a broken board and injury to his leg.

Surfers had huge waves for most of the final, with 20-30 wave face heights.

“It’s perfect size and really clean. There was probably one or two sets a heat that were too big,” Hobgood said after the contest. “Just some macking nuts waves out there.”

The World Cup is the second leg of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.  Dusty Payne leads the rankings for the mini-tour, followed by CJ Hobgood and Joel Parkinson.  All three will be competing at the Billabong Pipeline Masters which has a holding period starting Dec. 8.

RVCA Skate Team In Victorville This Weekend

If you’re a big boxing fan, then you know that this is a big weekend for the sport.  The GOLDEN BOY, Oscar De La Hoya will be moving down one weight class while Filipino boxer Manny PAC MAN Pacquiao will be moving up two weight classes at 147 lbs for what might be one of the biggest and most exciting fights in the history of the sport.  I’ve been really gearing up for this one.  For the past week I’ve been watching my entire boxing film collection: Diggstown, The Calcium Kid, Teen Wolf Too.  You know how I roll.  Really put an effort to watch the CALCIUM KID though.  It’s a very rare art house indie flick starring a young Orlando Bloom in one of his first films. 

Well if you’re rolling down to Vegas from Los Angeles this weekend, then I’ll see you there.  But on the way, try to make a stop in the lovely and very exciting city of Victorville, California.  The RVCA team will be visiting Pharmacy store in the Victorville Mall on Saturday, December 6th. 

Come out to meet Leo Romero, Kevin “Spanky” Long, Josh Harmony, Austin Stephens, Ed Templeton, Keegan Sauder, Cairo Foster, and Julian Davidson.  And if the weather permits, they will even put on a little session for you kiddies.  If I make it, I’m going to try to pick up some RVCA Mixed Martial Arts FIGHTING SHORTS.  Those things are tight.

Alistair Whitton On “The Daily Habit” Tonight

Tonight’s show of “The Daily Habit” on Fuel TV should be pretty radical with Vans and Rockstar Energy Drink BMX team rider Alistair Whitton as the guest.  Alistair’s sponsors also include Oakley, Macneil Bikes, Shadow Conspiracy and Protec.  The show airs tonight, Thursday, December 4th at 9:00 PM.  Also, Jessica Smith catches the big BMX winners at the 2008 Nora Cup Awards in Las Vegas.

But the best part of tonight’s show is the Habit’s musical guest, all the way from Sweden, The International Noise Conspiracy.  Don’t let the name fool you, they are not some top secret international conspiracy here to spy on us.  But they are damn loud, and damn good too.  Give it a listen. 

Stephen Murray On HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel

If you haven’t seen HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel featuring X Games BMX Gold Medallist Stephen Murray, I suggest you try to catch it.  I just saw it and it’s an amazing in depth look at Stephen’s journey starting way back when he took the gold at the 2001 X Games.  Sports reporter Mary Carillo talks with Stephen, his family, and close friends who have been there every step of his extraordinary rehabilitation process.  Check out a few words from HBO below and the air times.

His family open up to Mary Carillo on a very personal level to discuss what the last 17 months has been like, and what struggles the family has been faced with. Friends & fellow riders, Heath Pinter, Luke Parslow & John Jennings discuss the absence of medical insurance and why it is so difficult to get coverage as an action sports athlete. What does the future hold for Stephen? How does his manage his household with 2 young sons? We visit the manufacture where he & Kimaire Hunt, have developed a “Stay Strong Apparel Line”. Matix Skate Team Signings At Active

The Matix Skate team will be visiting not one, but two Active locations this weekend on Saturday December 6th.  Come out and get a signature from Brandon Biebel, Jeron Wilson, Mike Mo Capaldi, Torey Pudwill, and Mike Anderson.  At 1PM, they will be at the Active in Thousand Oaks and will make it across town to the Active in El Segundo at 4PM.  And if you’re in the Tempe, Arizona area the following Saturday the 13th, the Matix team will be visiting Utility Tempe.  Check out the flyer below for more info.

Epicly Later’d: Lakai - Carroll Brothers

Epicly Later’d is a great show and a huge asset to the VBS series.  Because of its highly personal and substantially interesting subject matter, anyone who has ever picked up a skateboard and took it seriously can relate directly to every single skater featured. 

This episode featuring Mike Carroll is goes beyond the subject of skateboarding.  In what is probably the most intense and most personal episode of Epicly Later’d to date, this show has hit a new level of documentary storytelling that the show has never seen before.  Watching some of this footage causes me to feel ill and almost guilty for watching something so personal. 

And this episode says a lot about how skateboarding can literally save a life from entering complete destruction.   About how it’s an escape for thousands of kids who have nowhere else to turn, but to the camaraderie with friends that comes with the lifestyle by which they become the only family a skater can have.  Can relate to this one big time.  Great episode.

Adidas Originals House Party

If you thought that watching TONY HAWK dance around in his tighty whiteys with a bunch of jocks while pretending to play music with toy instruments was cool, then you probably need to get your head checked.  That advertisement forced me to puke my Stovetop Stuffing dinner.  Okay, it wasn’t that bad but it was pretty disgusting.  The Heidi Klum spot wasn’t so bad though.  Although I would have rather of seen her sing a SEAL song. 

Well if you liked that ad, it probably was due to the fact you also love celebrities like Paris Hilton and PEREZ HILTON.  The new ADIDAS advertisement should be right up your alley.  Along with having many Adidas sponsored athletes, musicians, and artists, the ad itself makes all these celebrities look like commoners. 

Celebrating 60 years of soles and stripes and they’re doing it with all the Adidas Originals friends including David Beckham, Kevin Garnett, Missy Elliott, and Mark Gonzales. They should have added a few more celebrities though.  Like FIDEL

Kite Boarding Banned In Aussie Town

Are you not yet sold on kite boarding?  Well you should be because it is quickly taking the world by storm.  I give it just a few more years and you will see kite boarding in the Olympics, in the movies, and you will probably even see kite boarders “kiting” to school.  Yep that’s right.  Who says that kite boarding is restricted to water.  It will be the hottest craze around.  As they say, “Kite boarding is the new black”.  While Timmy struggles to skateboard up hill with his kiteless setup, little Joey Joe Joe will be kiting everywhere he goes. 

Just when I had a feeling that kite boarding was in the dawn of being the biggest and gnarliest “extreme sport” to date, a town in Australia decides to place a ban on the most totally broiffic up and coming surf activity.  Anyone caught partaking in the gnarly of gnarliest of extreme sports will be given a $200 fine for “Harnessing the wind” without council permission. 

That sounds like some new world order type of talk if you ask me.  Just like most abundant of natural resources, shouldn’t the wind be enjoyed by everyone?  Well yet again, the up and down world of kite boarding is catching the attention of international community and is taking on the world’s stage as I have said before, the “gnarly of gnarliest” of extreme sports.
